Ball State University receiver Dante Love underwent a five-hour surgery that ended early Sunday morning to repair a cervical spine fracture and spinal cord injury, team physician Dr. Jay Matchett said.
Matchett said Love is currently moving all four extremities.
Neurosurgeons examined Love late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, according to a press release from associate athletics director Joe Hernandez. Hernandez said there will be no further information released Sunday, but coach Brady Hoke will talk about Love's injury at Monday's news conference.
Hoke, who was with Love at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis throughout the night, said he was pleased with what the doctors told him regarding the surgery.
"We were told the surgery went well," Hoke said. "Sunday morning Dante was alert and extremely tired. His attitude and spirits are good, and we are praying for him right now."
Love was injured when he caught a two-yard pass from quarterback Nate Davis with 10:45 left in the first half of Saturday's 42-20 win against Indiana University. After the hit, Love laid motionless on the field before his father, mother and sister joined him. His facemask was taken off as precautionary measure.
