The elevator that trapped more than 16 Ball State University students Tuesday night was caused by overcrowding, not a mechanical error, Alan Hargrave, director of housing and residence life, said.

"The people who overloaded the elevator, that was the problem," Hargrave said. "I think most people recognize when there's no room on the elevator, you don't get on it."

There were no reported injuries or damages, Hargrave said.

"I think for people who continue to crowd the elevator when it's full, they need to use more sense in the future," he said. "There was laughing and singing going on in the elevator. That is not a joke."
