Ball State University will sponsor a new public charter school set to open in fall 2010.

The university announced Wednesday that President Jo Ann Gora approved sponsoring the Discovery Charter School in Chesterton, Ind.

Discovery Charter School will open for the 2010-11 school year with kindergarten through sixth grade classes. The school also will begin teaching seventh grade classes in 2011 and eighth grade classes in 2012.

The initial projected enrollment for Discovery Charter School is 273 students.

This is the second charter school Ball State has announced it will sponsor this summer. The university agreed in June to sponsor the Hammond Academy for Science and Technology in Hammond, Ind.

Ball State is sponsoring 28 public charter schools. In addition, eight more Ball State charter schools are scheduled to open by 2010.

As the sponsor of a charter school, Ball State is not in charge of running the school, but it has the right to end its charter if the school does not meet performance standards.
