Ball State receives sustainability award

Ball State received a new award in recognition for its efforts to maintain a sustainable campus.

The 2010 Second Nature Climate Leadership Award was presented to Ball State President Jo Ann Gora Wednesday, Oct. 13 in Denver. Ball State was given the award under the doctorate-granting university category at the American College and University President's Climate Commitment Conference.

The geothermal project, one of the main reasons behind the university's nomination, is projected to bring jobs and cut costs. The project is estimated to save more than $2 million a year once it is completed, Marc Ransford, media relations manager for Ball State, said.

Still in phase one, the university expects to shut down the central chilling plant.

This is not the first award given to Ball State for its green efforts. The Princeton Review recognized Ball State in its 2010 "Guide to 286 Green Colleges" and the National Wildlife Federation's "Campus Environment 2008 Report Card" lauded the university's commitment to recycling, green landscaping and grounds management.

The Second Nature Climate Leadership Award is given to colleges and university presidents showing excellence in sustainability. The university must be a signatory of the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment and a member in good standing with the organization. University and college presidents, chancellors and implementation liaisons are nominated by each other according to their institutions' climate leadership efforts.

The nominations are evaluated and winners are then selected by members of the Second Nature Board who are not affiliated with ACUPCC institutions along with the Second Nature Staff.

Second Nature began in 1993 and has been working to encourage sustainability by focusing on the secondary education system in the United States.

The ACUPCC consists of the leaders of 685 colleges and universities in every state, representing one-third of the 17 million college students in America.
