The Latino Student Union week of events kicked off Sept. 16 at the Scramble Light, and there is still time to get involved with the organization this week.
The week of events aims to celebrate and educate others about Latino culture, and will focus on intellectual, cultural and social events throughout the week.
Salsa Night
Monday, Sept. 19 — 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 310
The LSU is pairing up with the Multicultural Center to host Salsa Night. Students of all abilities will be able to learn salsa from instructor Melody Carr, who teaches in Indianapolis. She will be teaching both individual dances as well as some partner dances. The event is free.
Food Drive
Tuesday, Sept. 20 — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Scramble Light
The LSU is also holding a volunteering event at the Scramble Light. Students can bring in canned foods and non-perishable goods. The donations will go to the homeless shelter Muncie Missions.
The Reality of Intersectionality
Tuesday, Sept. 20 — 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
L.A. Pittenger Student Center Multi-purpose room
This educational event will include a discussion focusing on intersectionality and how it affects the Latino community. There will be a short presentation, speakers and an interactive game. A group of panelists with multiple cultural identities will be there to answer questions and discuss what it is like to grow up with an intersectional background.
Potluck
Wednesday, Sept. 21 — 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Multicultural Center
On Wednesday, the LSU will host their annual Potluck event. Students are invited to bring a dish or plate of food that represents their specific Latino heritage and culture.
“A lot of us are Latino, but that doesn’t mean that we know a lot about each other’s cultures,” LSU President Victoria Voelkel said. “It’s a really nice way to start learning about each other and further discuss the specifics of each country.”
Fiesta on the Green
Thursday, Sept. 22 — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
L.A. Pittenger Student Center Brick Patio
Thursday will mark the last event of the week with the Fiesta on the Green. This will be a social event including a Tex-Mex buffet, traditional Latino games such as Loteria (a Hispanic version of bingo) and a DJ playing Spanish music.
Voelkel said it’s an opportunity to learn about different aspects of Latino heritage.
“You do not have to identify as Latino to come to any of our events,” she said. “You just have to be willing to learn and be open-minded about the culture – that is our only requirement. Also, all of our events are free!”
