Along Riverside Avenue on Sunday, fraternity members were outside their houses with open doors, welcoming Ball State students interested in learning more about the various greek chapters on campus.

The Block Bash, hosted by greek fraternities, gave students a chance to learn about specific chapter values, morals, philanthropies and academics.

Jesse Witt, Sigma Chi vice president, said that not only is it a good excuse to bring out the Slip ‘n Slide, but it also helps them meet potential recruits in a relaxed atmosphere.

"It gives the freshmen a different idea of what being part of a fraternity brother is about, not just the weekend scene," Witt said.

Brian Readnour, freshman entrepreneurship major, said he heard good things about Sigma Chi, which is why he stopped by during the Block Bash.

"I came to the Block Bash to get a personal view of the fraternity," he said. "We get to meet everyone in a small group, and get a tour of the house too."

Readnour said the Block Bash gave him a lot of information that he can use when making a decision on which Ball State greek chapter he will choose.

Brad Thornburg, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, said he wants recruits to learn what each chapter offers and to get as many people out on Riverside as possible.

"We want to find the highest quality men on campus to join," Thornburg said. "We pride ourselves on being true gentlemen, so anyone that can act in the manner, they are what we are looking for."

Joe Gangnon, Sigma Chi recruitment chairman, said it is looking for new recruits who share the same core values, morals and ideals and can complete the entire interview process.

"It is kind of nerve-racking to come over for a visit during the day, and during parties it's hard to meet new recruits," he said. "This is a great opportunity to come by and have a great time outside and learn more about the brothers in each fraternity."
