SPORTS FOR THOUGHT: Football should aim for 10 wins

SPORTS FOR THOUGHT: Football should aim for 10 wins

In the dictionary, the word "rut" is defined as "a sunken track or groove made by the passage of vehicles." For a decade-long stretch, created by the vehicle of its own incompetency, the word defined the position of Ball State's football program. As a new millennium began, the program experienced its darkest period in the midst of a 21-game losing streak that spanned three seasons.

GIGOLO JOE: Roommates' cats, rules should not ruin friendships

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

-24 minutes ago by Joe Cermak

Dear Gigolo Joe: I'm living in an apartment with these two other girls. Don't get the wrong impression: nothing is happening between us. We have a pretty good friendship, but I hate their stupid cats. There are three of them, and they aren't those "miracle cats" that can use the toilet to go to the bathroom.

Beshear wrong to think coal can be mined "environmentally"

KY Kernel, University of Kentucky, KY

-24 minutes ago by Taylor Shelton

Late last week, Gov. Steve Beshear had an announcement to make: he wants Kentucky to become the "energy capital of the world." In theory, I guess that doesn't sound like too bad of a deal. A challenge? Yes. But a problem? No. That is, until Beshear said how he was going to do it.

Letter to the Editor: Goodnight, and Good luck UK Professors

KY Kernel, University of Kentucky, KY

I'm leaning against Obama because he's Muslim, I'm leaning toward McCain because he believes in the right of Czechoslovakia to still exist, and I'm ending my friendship with two UK professors after reading a Lexington Herald-Leader commentary, "Fair to point out lack of ideological diversity at UK.

Training and Wisdom

BG News, Bowling Green State University, OH

What results from having been primarily trained in clearly defined skills as opposed to being generally educated for self-direction? We know what training in a specific skill is but very few courses have had the stated goal of making students wiser. Researchers reported in the American Psychologist that when we are wise, we use knowledge for the well being of oneself and others.

When it comes to the Internet, old people have the know-how of squid. I'm not sure if it's because they're stuck in their ways or because there aren't a lot of web sites dedicated to false teeth, but something about going online leaves them quaking in their Depends.

Letter to the Editor: Todd not listening to voices of disgruntled

KY Kernel, University of Kentucky, KY

Just out of curiosity, as an avid UK fan, mother of a former student and employee of UK, what's up with the fact that in a time of budget cuts due to funding and raising student costs the only one person ranks a bonus when all those hard working employees making him look so good don't even get their modest 2 percent raise?

Does President Lee Todd not open the windows of his ivory tower long enough to hear how disgruntled most of his employees and students really are?

The budget cuts in the departments that may not put UK in the top-20 bracket, but they have brought the university quite a bit of versatility and notoriety.

Travelin' the Globe

BROOKLYN - New York City never ceases to amaze me.

This past weekend, my roommate and I decided we should make a trip to Coney Island, in light of the potential changes. I made my first pilgrimage there earlier in the summer, but by the time my friends and I got to the beach, the sky turned cloudy and began to rain shortly thereafter.

Pie-in-the-sky leases fall on students' faces

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

The problem with saying "told you so" is that it assumes one party is more enlightened about a situation and its solution than the other party. We don't possess any particular insight into the campus real estate market that other students don't have.

Still, it doesn't surprise us that at least one of the brand new high-rise apartment buildings will not be fully ready for students when they come back next month.

Re: A letter in response to Barry Blitt's cartoon "The Politics of Fear" (July 21st, 2008)

The controversy over The New Yorker's cover depicting an anti-American Barack Obama in the Oval Office is unquestionably rooted in the darkest ideologies of scare tactics and fear mongering.

In the midst of a campus stroll late Sunday night, two friends and I perched ourselves on the ledge of Frog Baby's fountain. We lay motionless one-by-one around the fountain's bed. Muncie was treating us to a beautifully crisp, comfortable and clear night, providing a calming atmosphere for gazing endlessly into the summer night's sky.

Attack of the 'change-lings'

Come September, when the political party conventions commence, presumptive Republican nominee John McCain will take to the podium in St. Paul with an audience of three-piece suits, oil execs and any other good ol' boy with a VIP pass. About one thousand miles away in Denver, presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama will be making a similar acceptance speech, except his will lack the gas-guzzling SUVs, National Rifle Association officials and padded seats.

Soave off target on smoking ban To the Daily: In spite of Robert Soave's disclaimer at the outset of his column (Smoking them out, 07/14/2008), I suspect that he has indeed inhaling something - and something more potent than tobacco smoke. Without directly saying so, Soave tries to frame the public smoking ban as a civil rights issue, even going so far as to claim that smokers are "persecuted" under such legislation.

Road trip! A solution for all our problems

Chicago Flame, University of Illinois, IL

3 days ago by Josh Moyer

One of the more frustrating things about being a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago is the lack of community at our school. We all have friends on campus and at home that we can enjoy life with, but if we are honest with ourselves we will acknowledge that it is difficult to meet people at this university because a wide majority of students treat it as if it were a giant community college.

Based on the short amount of time he's been with the University, it appears Rich Rodriguez's name is "trouble." The Athletic Department's problem child made headlines again last week when an out-of-court settlement determined that the Wolverines' new head football coach would have to pay $4 million for breaking his contract with his former employer, West Virginia University.
