Ball State University animal lovers are expected to show up in support of the Muncie Animal Shelter at the City Council meeting tonight in downtown Muncie.

Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley announced last week the shelter would be closing Dec. 31 due to budget cuts that would leave it understaffed.

A special City Council meeting created to discuss the future of the animal shelter will take place at 5:30 p.m. today in the City Hall Auditorium, located on the first floor of the building.

Students have been organizing for this meeting through Facebook events, such as "Coalition to save Muncie Animal Shelter," which had 231 "confirmed guests" as of Monday afternoon.

The group plans to demonstrate the large volunteer base Ball State students could provide to help keep the shelter open.
