NEW YORK —

Airing live from Los Angeles, this years MTV Video Music Awards will be hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler on Sept. 12 at 9 p.m.

Also the host of her own witty late-night show "Chelsea Lately," Handler was honored to be the second women ever to host the VMAs by herself. The last woman to do so was comedian Roseanne Barr in 1994.

After winning last year's "Best New Artist" award, Lady Gaga leads this year's list of nominees with a record-breaking 13 nominations. She has also earned the distinction of being the first female artist with nominations for two different videos, "Bad Romance" and "Telephone" featuring Beyonce, in the Video of the Year category.

Following Gaga in the list of top nominees is Eminem with 8 nominations including Best Male Video and Video of the Year for his video "Not Afraid."

Joining Eminem and Lady Gaga in the category for Video of the Year are 30 Seconds to Mars for their video "Kings and Queens," B.o.B. for "Airplanes" featuring Hayley Williams, and Florence + the Machine for "Dog Days Are Over."

Several VMA rookies join the group of the usual contenders to vie for "Best New Artist." The nominees include Jason Derulo, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, and indie rock band Broken Bells.

With A-list presenters such as Glee's Jane Lynch and the legendary Cher and performers such as Eminem and Jason Derulo, this year's VMAs are sure to be as unforgettable as the last, especially with Kanye West returning to perform.

The hip-hop star is still feeling the pain over his trophy grab from Taylor Swift last year — and he's expressing his pain all over Twitter.

West has unleashed a torrent of emotions on his official Twitter on Saturday, acknowledging he was wrong for taking an award from the country music sweetheart at the VMAs. But he says he "bled hard." He says he had to cancel his tour with Lady Gaga and even lost employees.

He once again apologized to Swift and says he has written a song for Swift that he hopes she will perform.

West experienced tremendous backlash over the stunt — even President Barack Obama called him a jackass.

West is working on a new album and due to appear at the VMAs again this year.

Although voting for the other categories is already closed, fans can still vote for "Best New Artist" through Sept. 12 by visiting MTV.com.
