Election Day is less than a month away, but if you're not registered to vote, you're about to hit a wall.

Today is the last day to register in Indiana. Around the state, Hoosiers are showing they care about this election: A record-setting 540,000 residents have registered or updated their registrations this year.

If you wanted to cast your ballot but forgot to take the first step and register, don't sweat. You have until 6 p.m. when the voter registration office in the Delaware County Building closes.

And if you're feeling lazy - no excuses. You can find the form online.

WHO NEEDS TO REGISTER: Obviously, first-time ballot casters will need to register, but if you've moved to a new precinct, you also need to fill out a form.

WHO CAN REGISTER: It's pretty basic - Are you a U.S. citizen? Are you at least 18? Have you lived in the precinct for at least 30 days? Are you currently not in prison?

If you've answered "no" to any of these, then pitch the form because it's not for you.

FINDING THE FORM: You can pick up and submit a voter registration form at the voter registration office in the Delaware County Building, 100 W. Main St., downtown.

It's too late to mail in your registration, but if you want to save time at the office, you can print the form beforehand and fill it out. Go to the Secretary of State's Web site - www.in.gov/sos/elections - and click Register to Vote to find a form.

FILLING OUT THE FORM: Don't worry, this form isn't the same battle of patience and wits as it is when filing for taxes or requesting student loans. Take about two minutes and fill out your name and basic information, and you're done.

It's a 16-step process, and there are directions to walk you through the details.

Election season is in full force, and it's time to jump into the political fracas. Many Indiana residents, including Ball State students, have shown they care about who ends up in the Oval Office, but you can't participate in any of this if you don't register by the end of today.

It shouldn't be too late to mail it in ... according to http://www.longdistancevoter.org/voter_registration_deadlines, the Indiana deadline rules say Postmarked or Received by October 6. (Continued…)

Verified it via the link you guys posted from the secretary of state. In the "2008 Indiana Voter Information Guide" it clearly states on page two, bottom left: "mail in voter registration applications must be postmarked ON OR BEFORE the above registration deadlines. (Continued…)
