CHEERLEADING: Sophomore OK after injury at practice
A Ball State University cheerleader who left practice Thursday night in an ambulance is doing OK.
Allison Richards fell from a cheerleading pyramid a little after 10 p.m. Thursday while practicing with the all-girls cheerleading squad in Worthen Arena, according to a report from the Ball State University Police Department. She then hit her head on the floor of the arena.
Richards could not answer very many questions, but she said her head, neck and back hurt, according to the report. She also seemed to lose consciousness a couple times, according to the report.
The sophomore from Indianapolis was put in a neck brace and wheeled out of the arena to an ambulance. She was then taken to Ball Memorial Hospital.
Associate Athletic Director Pat Quinn said Richards was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
"It's not common, but it probably happens a couple times a year," Quinn said of injuries during cheerleading practices.
Quinn said Richards was doing fine Friday afternoon.
Richards broke her nose when she was hit by an elbow while falling, Quinn said. She also suffered a slight concussion, he said.
However, she was able to go to her classes Friday, Quinn said.
