Alarms wake students at 4 a.m. after fire starts in break room

Hours before classes started Wednesday, almost 2,000 Ball State University students - some in their pajamas or less - found themselves standing out in the chilly air after waking to the blare of fire alarms and public safety personnel banging on doors. As of Wednesday afternoon, Muncie Fire Department was investigating the cause of a fire that began at about 4 a.

Three Ball State University students were arrested late Wednesday on suspicion of stealing almost $16,000 worth of musical instruments from Zionsville Community High School, police said.
Shawn Blankenship, John Guilliam and Jillian Smith face charges of burglary and theft - both Class C felonies with standard prison sentences of two years if convicted, according to a Zionsville Police Department report.

Admins say it would be waste of money to invest in new system

A Muncie Fire Department commander expressed concern about the evacuation of LaFollette Complex because the fire alarm had to be manually pulled Wednesday, but Ball State University officials said the evacuation went smoothly and there is no reason to update the alarm system.

Two cars collide at intersection in parking lot North of campus

A University Police Department officer was involved in a car accident with a graduate student Wednesday afternoon in the North commuter lot.
Graduate student Jake DeLion said he slowed down to about 15 miles per hour to turn into the parking lot from Bethel Avenue.

After Wednesday's fire at LaFollette Complex, fire is on the mind of many students.
Muncie Fire Department will have "Burning Down the House," a mock smoke-out of Scheidler apartment 129 at 1 p.m. today.
Three fire trucks will be there and six firefighters will teach students how to escape from a smoky apartment during a fire.

If approved, students' opinions of professors would publish online

The Student Government Association proposed legislation that would give students the chance to find out more about their professors before they sign up for classes.
Vice President Carrie Cozad said the legislation, which would implement mandatory, online professor evaluations, must pass through University Senate before it can be approved by the president and the Board of Trustees.

Funeral services for Ball State University freshman Joel Marley were held at Grandstaff-Hentgen cemetery Nov. 5 in Wabash.
Marley died at Wabash County Hospital on Oct. 31 from a car accident about a mile South of his hometown of Wabash.
Freshman David Perry said Marley was a fun person to be around and was a good man.

The Ball State University chapter of the NAACP began a recruitment drive Wednesday in the Art and Journalism Building.
Secretary Brent Lyle said after a 15-year absence, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has a chapter at Ball State University.
