It's well documented how absurdly expensive it is for ad time during the Super Bowl. This year alone, it is on average $3 million dollars to buy space for a 30 second commercial. With this much money at stake, companies go all out to try and impress customers with expensive commercials with good production value. This, of course, leaves room for widespread criticism of which commercials are well done, and which one falls short. This year, I'll break down which commercials are worth a YouTube search the day after and which ones are best left forgotten, let's start with the worst.
The Worst
Bud Light Platinum
If you're paying $3 million for a commercial then why put something so pedestrian out? There's zero creativity in any of these commercials, they aren't any different from a normal, run-of-the-mill beer commercial.
David Beckham
If I'm watching Super Bowl commercials, I'm looking to entertained, not watch psuedo-male erotica. Plus, $15 for a pair of underwear? Seriously?
Fiat Woman Commercial
This commercial was one of those that just didn't make much sense to me. Why is someone having an intimate moment with a car? I get it's because the car is strikingly beautiful, but it just seemed so silly to me.
The Best
Doritos Dog Commercial
Generally, Doritos new campaign to have commercials made by fans has been hit or miss. This is one of the better ones, as a dog bribes a man into forgetting that the dog buried his cat. A little morbid, but still very funny.
M&Ms Commercial
Early on, this commercial was by far the most funny. The M&M stripping down to LMFAO is a pretty funny stunt, considering the general weak nature of most of the early commercials.
Volkswagen Dog/Darth Vader
This was a fun commercial. Watching a dog working out so he can finally make it through a dog door to chase a car was fun. The transition into Darth Vader force choking someone was awesome.
Ferris Bueller Honda
This was a very clever commercial. It brings elements of John Hughes' "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and having Matthew Broderick act out elements as he narrates in a similar fashion to the end of the film. Again this commercial wasn't amazing, but it was entertaining enough.
Samsung Galaxy Commercial
These commercials have run throughout the year, as Samsung has begun an assault on the Apple franchise. This commercial finally spiced things up a bit as a big musical number breaks out. This commercial wasn't terrific, but it was a nice culmination of a year's worth of ads.
The Bridgestone Tire Commercials
These commercials were clever and unexpected. I didn't think a commercial where sports balls were being replaced by new ones made of Bridgestone Tires would be funny, but they were entertaining. I thought both the one where Troy Aikman throws a ball that curves incredibly was very sly and the one with the quiet basketball was funny. Fun overall.
The Winner
Overall, I thought this was a fairly mediocre year for Super Bowl commercials. If I have to pick a winner, I would say the Bridgestone commercials were probably the most entertaining. They displayed the most fun entertainment I saw. I thought the M&Ms commercial was probably the funniest. Overall, though, this was a relatively a weak year.
