Many Ball State University students must complete an internship for credit in order to graduate. But, while most look for internship opportunities outside of the city and even the state, many students can fulfill their internship requirements here in Muncie and still be a full-time student.
According to a Ball State Career Center internship survey, 40 of the 98 responses received from students who completed their internships reported completing their internship experience in Muncie.
Carly Acree, education assistant for Cornerstone Center for the Arts, said many Ball State students have fulfilled their requirements while working for Cornerstone in the past couple of years.
"We have had art, graphic design, videography, telecommunications and public relations interns here at Cornerstone in previous years," she said.
Cornerstone is known for its elaborate building and various art-related programs the center puts on for the Muncie community. Many of these programs would not be possible without the help of student interns and volunteers.
"We have opened up some new portions here for students looking for internships here in Muncie during the school year," Acree said. "We are looking for business management, hospitality and communications majors this semester as well."
Cornerstone is only one of many businesses in Muncie looking for help during the school year.
Minnetrista, a museum and cultural center located near downtown Muncie, is also looking for students who need to fulfill internship requirements.
"We have exhibits from East Central Indiana. We have gardens, sculptures and nature areas. We have traveling exhibits that are related to East Central Indiana," said Mary Zwickl, human resources assistant at Minnetrista.
When interning with Minnetrista, many of the positions are paid.
"Most of these internships are paid stipend and they get the credit hours for their internships," said Zwickl.
Zwickl said there is much to see and do while visiting Minnetrista, and to help put on programs and keep the grounds beautiful, Minnetrista needs the help of Ball State students.
"There is always an internship available in collections. Sales and events is another internship that's available at Minnetrista," she said. "We have marketing, graphic design, photography, and public relation internships available as well."
Students who are looking to fulfill internship requirements during the school year should talk to an internship coordinator or go to the Career Center for more information.
