After the women's golf team's worst finish of the season, coach Katherine Mowat wasn't at all disappointed in her team Monday.
The Ball State University women's golf team shot a 35-over-par 323 in the final round of the Nittany Lion Invitational to finish the 56-hole tournament in seventh place out of 14 teams.
Prior to this tournament, Ball State had first-place and second-place finishes in its other two tournaments this fall.
Mowat said she was happy with her team's performance against a tough field, especially with Monday's weather conditions.
"It was very windy, so some of the course was playing long and made it more challenging," she said.
Of the five Ball State golfers competing in the final round, Rachael Pruett was the only golfer to shoot a lower score Monday than in Sunday's second round.
Mowat said the course playing long hurt her team's scorers, and that her team needs to make the necessary adjustments to a longer course.
"That's definitely a concern and you just have to learn how to adjust your own game," Mowat said. "Really you have what you have, keep the ball in play and focus on your short game."
Freshman Brittany Kelly shot a team-low, 7-over-par 79 Monday to finish the tournament tied for eighth place.
The 79 was Kelly's highest round at the invitational. After the second round Kelly was in sixth place and one stroke out of third place.
"I didn't play as well as I wanted to," Kelly said. "This was a good experience and it was such a good playing field."
This is the third time in as many tournaments that Kelly has finished in the top 10. Kelly opened the season with a first-place finish at the Thunder Fall Invitational and a fifth-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Preview.
Mowat said although Kelly missed some opportunities Monday, she was happy to see her finish in the top 10.
"It's a top 10 finish and a good showing," Mowat said.
Of the four Mid-American Conference teams competing in the tournament, Ball State finished second, beating Ohio University and Bowling Green State University. Western Michigan University finished in fourth place and had two players finish in the top 10, including first-place Laura Bavaird, who shot a 7-over-par 233 in three rounds.
Mowat said she was keeping an eye on how the MAC teams fared throughout the tournament. She said despite the Broncos having a better score, the Cardinals will be ready to compete with Western Michigan in April for the MAC Championship.
"They're a pretty solid team and we can definitely keep track with them," she said.
