Ball State University women's tennis coach Kathy Bull has used the fall season to her full advantage to test her players.

Beginning with the Ball State Invitational in September and continuing with this weekend's Lady Tigers Invitational in Memphis, Tenn., Bull said she has shifted lineups, mixed doubles teams and experimented with new situations for her players, all with the spring season in mind.

"We're just trying a lot of different things," Bull said. "That's the great thing about the fall."

For the upcoming weekend's tournament in Memphis, Bull has again rotated her doubles pairings. Sophomore Sophie Quist will team up with freshman Georgina Thomson as the Cardinals' No. 1 doubles team. Thomson and Quist have never competed as a doubles team so far this year.

"We're still trying to find ourselves and our niche in how to play doubles," Bull said. "That's been kind of a source of contention. We still haven't solved that dilemma yet."

In three tournaments this fall, the Cardinals have advanced into the main draw three times but have never advanced past the quarterfinal of any main draw in doubles play.

The Lady Tigers Invitational will serve as the close of the fall competition season for Ball State. Other teams participating include Murray State University, Tennessee Tech University, Southern Illinois University, and the University of Memphis, who Ball State will face in a dual meet Feb. 29, 2008.

Quist will compete in Division I singles after spending last weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional. Quist lost to Anna Dzeva of Purdue University 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, in qualifying action.

"[Quist] kind of gets the big picture now," Bull said. "The rest is up to her."

After winter break, the spring season begins Jan. 12, 2008 with the Indiana Doubles Tournament at Bloomington.
