Mascot from Akron remains undefeated, faces Big Red next

Zippy clinched a spot in the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge playoffs and the top spot overall with an eighth consecutive win last week.

Zippy (8-0), the mascot of the University of Akron, defeated Cosmo (4-4) of Brigham Young University with 26,344 votes compared to Cosmo's 24,887. Overall Zippy leads the competition with 285,218 votes.

At 8-0, Zippy became the first mascot to clinch the playoffs and secured a first-round bye. Six of the 12 mascots will make the playoffs.

Zippy will compete against Big Red from Western Kentucky University (4-4) this week. The match-up is the featured match-up of the competition this week.

It is the sixth year of the mascot challenge. All 12 participating schools receive $5,000 for their mascot program. The winning mascot gets an additional $5,000 for its program.

The competitions include Cocky from the University of South Carolina, Herbie Husker from the University of Nebraska, Butch T. Cougar from Washington State University and Monte the Grizzly from the University of Montana, who won the competition twice.
