With a time of 21:12, Ball State University sophomore Ali Bishel finished 52nd at the Division I Women's NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday.

Bishel, who qualified for the national meet by finishing seventh at the Great Lakes Regional meet, finished about 1:40 behind the race leader.

Sally Kipyego, a junior from Texas Tech University, won the race with a time of 19:30.9. Kipyego set a course record and won her second consecutive national title by about 17 seconds.

Bishel had the better finish of the two Mid-American Conference runners at the meet. Laura Neufarth, a sophomore from Miami University, finished 82nd out of the 253 runners with a time of 21:25.7.

Neufarth won the MAC championship meet earlier this year while Bishel finished second.

Bishel was the first Ball State runner to qualify for the event since Jill Scully in 2004. Scully also finished 52nd when she competed with a time of 21:22.1.

Stanford University won the team championship for the third consecutive year and for the fourth time in five years.

Why doesn't Ball State have a men's cross country team? The flags and cones cost more than renovations to the new football stadium?
