WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Team says it is ready to step up
Illinois State beat Ball State last year for 1st loss of season

After beginning the past two seasons with five consecutive wins, the Ball State University's women's basketball has its worst record through the first seven games of the year since the 1998-99 campaign.
Despite the Cardinals' 3-4 record, junior guard Porchia Green said her team isn't deflated by the slow start. Instead, she said it has done the opposite for her and her teammates.
"We just had one of our greatest practices of the season," Green said as she was walking to her car Monday. "Everyone was competing and getting after it. We're not hanging our heads because we've lost some games. I think everybody is ready to step it up a notch."
Ball State coach Tracy Roller said she hopes her team's solid practice carries over to its game against Illinois State University. The match up is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. and will be the Cardinals' first home game since Nov. 17.
Illinois State gave Ball State its first loss last season, an 82-72 defeat on Dec. 6, 2006. Though she's not thinking about that game entering this year's rematch, Roller said, she knows a win could be important
"It's been a great rivalry the past couple of years with Illinois State," Roller said. "Last year is last year, and I don't think our team really thinks much about that [loss]. But a win would be huge because we just need to get our confidence back as a team."
