LAS VEGAS - The house lights grew brighter as the Miss America talent preliminary ended without a scholarship for Miss Indiana Nicole Rash.
The Rash family and friends left the theater undeterred before their daughter competes in the main competition Saturday, and they were ready to see Nicole in the ball room for a post-preliminary social.

Miss Indiana and current Ball State University student Nicole Rash finished as the first runner-up in the Miss America Competition on Saturday in Las Vegas.
In addition to placing second, Rash received a $25,000 scholarship.

Health Center sees 100 patients with illness in one day, director says

The number of reported cases of influenza on Ball State University's campus has increased considerably from last year, said Kent Bullis, medical director at the Amelia T. Wood Student Health Center.
The Health Center was suddenly overwhelmed with flu patients this week, Bullis said.

Delta Tau Delta prohibits chapter president from discussing review

Delta Tau Delta International Headquarters has prohibited the president of the Ball State University chapter from discussing the expulsion or suspension of almost half of the fraternity's members.
Chapter President Kyle Pfeifer could not comment on any matters involving the fraternity without permission from headquarters, he said before the Interfraternity Council meeting Thursday.

Week of events ends Saturday with scholarship pageant

Mother, father make sacrifices to help daughter compete

When Cindy Rash reflected on helping her daughter be Miss Indiana in the past year, she started to laugh.
"I chuckle because it has been pretty busy," she said.
The role of Miss Indiana requires traveling around the state, Cindy Rash said, and she went with Nicole when able to.

Bonus to tax refunds is intended to help stimulate economy

WASHINGTON - Because of an economic stimulus package Congressional leaders and the White House agreed upon Thursday, Ball State University students could find themselves about $300 richer.
The stimulus package would give most tax filers refunds of $600 to $1,200, and more if they have children.
