A Ball State University elementary education major appeared on PBS' "Across Indiana," which was aired Monday in Indianapolis, to promote a book she wrote for children with cancer.

Kim Martin said she wrote the first draft of "H is for Hair Fairy" in one of her classes.

After her first son, Nolan, was diagnosed at the age of 22 months, Martin said, she began to look for cancer-related children's books at the library, but what she found contained more facts than encouragement.

She said a magazine article about a woman whose husband left money under her pillow the day she lost her hair was the inspiration for her book.

According to the book's Web site, "H is for Hair Fairy" is an alphabet book to inspire, comfort, educate and encourage children being treated for cancer.

The book uses the alphabet to explain different aspects of coping with cancer treatment and to provide practical information about the disease, according to the Web site.

Martin said all proceeds from the book are donated to the Hair Fairy Project, a nonprofit organization that gives money to children with cancer.

"H is for Hair Fairy" is available through amazon.com.
