A member of the Ball State University men's tennis team has been suspended indefinitely following an arrest, coach Bill Richards said.

According to Delaware County Jail officials, Ball State police arrested Sophomore Bret Berryman, 20, early Sunday on charges of minor consumption of alcohol, a Class C misdemeanor, and driving while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor. Berryman was released on $3,500 bond later that day, according to jail officials.

Richards said Berryman would not travel with the tennis team to Boise State University on Friday.

"Obviously, it is a disappointment," Richards said. "We are still waiting for circumstances. Bret obviously made bad decisions. As parents, coaches and players we talk about making the right decisions, and that didn't happen in this case."

Berryman declined to comment on Tuesday about his arrest.

Richards said he is disappointed with Berryman as a result of the arrest.

"I've been doing this for a long time and you try not to let your guard down, take anything for granted or be surprised with anything," Richards said. "We are disappointed and concerned for Bret and his future, both academically and as an athlete."

Berryman primarily plays No. 3 or 4 singles for the Cardinals and has a 6-7 record this season.

In doubles he partners with freshman Eduardo Pavia and the pair have a 7-3 record this season.

Berryman last competed for Ball State on Friday when the team played at UNLV, a match which the Cardinals lost 5-2. Berryman and Pavia picked up the lone doubles win for the Cardinals in the loss, an 8-3 victory. Berryman lost his singles match 1-6, 3-6.

Last year, Berryman was the Mid-Åmerican Conference Freshman of the Year. He was 10-13 and 5-0 in the MAC.

According to the Indiana Code, if Berryman is convicted of his Class A misdemeanor, he could be sentenced up to one year in prison and receive a maximum fine of $5,000. If Berryman is convicted of his Class C misdemeanor, he could be sentenced up to 60 days in prison and receive a maximum fine of $500.
