CHICAGO — A Northwestern University professor and journalism students who spent three years investigating the case of a man convicted in the 1978 killing of a security guard believe they have evidence that shows prosecutors put the wrong man behind bars. But in the quest to prove his innocence, they may have to defend themselves, too.

Committee motions to change Fall Semester breaks

The University Education Committee approved a motion to alter the Fall Semester academic calendar by extending what is now Thanksgiving Break and eliminating what are now Fall Break and Fruesday, Laura Helms, associate dean and director of academic systems for University College, said.The motion, which was approved Tuesday, must still be approved by Faculty Council, University Senate and the Ball State University Board of Trustees in order to be implemented, she said.

Teaching license reforms spark controversy

A controversial proposal made by the Indiana Department of Education to change teaching license rules has Ball State University students and professors calling for a revision.The proposal, which was made July 29, includes the elimination of some required examinations and changes to the required credit hours for elementary and secondary education teachers.

Third suspect arrested in connection with armed robbery at Scheumann Stadium parking lot

University Police arrested Terry Keith Waldron, 25, Friday on preliminary charges of armed robbery in connection with the armed robbery of two Ball State University students on Oct. 12 in the Scheumann Stadium parking lot.Waldron is the third Muncie resident arrested in connection with the robbery. Camron Charles Taylor, 21, and Joshua A. Broxson, 25, are already in police custody.

Senior Robert Wilbur wins Golden Key spelling bee

Nervous students sat in a Teachers College classroom while they waited for their names to be called. Some were there for the prizes, others were forced to attend by their friends or came for fun.In the end, senior philosophy major Robert Wilbur won the $100 first prize in the second annual Golden Key Spelling Bee, organized by the Ball State University chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society.

WCRD makes top 5 in national contest

The Ball State University student radio station WCRD has been nominated for the "College Radio Woodie" award at mtvU's annual awards show.The radio station beat out numerous other college radio stations to remain in the top five. The University of Missouri, California State University at San Bernadino, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Puget Sound were with Ball State in the fan voted category, according to the mtvU press release.

Educators protest proposed teaching license requirements

The third and final public hearing about the proposed changes to Indiana teacher licensing standards drew more than 250 people Monday to a conference room at the Indiana State Library.The meeting lasted more than two hours and was filled with educators speaking staunchly against Indiana State Superintendent of Education Tony Bennett's proposal.
