When Andrew Miller stepped onstage, his voice was calm. Facing the audience, he said in a raspy voice, "Why so serious?"

Miller went on making a variety of other impressions, including Elvis, almost the entire cast of "Family Guy," Forrest Gump, Sean Connery and Mr. T.

Ball State students were able to show off their various talents Wednesday night at the University Program Board's monthly Open Mic Night. There were a variety of performances, including guitar and piano players, singers, stand-up comedians and dancers.

Slade Keppler, vice president of administration for UPB and organizer of the event, was happy with the performer and audience turnout.

"We had these open mic nights last semester, but we never had this big of a turnout," he said. "We had 21 performers come out tonight."

With the high participation, the Open Mic Night had a late start and ran longer than it was supposed to. The event started after 9 p.m. and lasted until about 11:30 p.m.; it was supposed to last until 11 p.m.

"Thankfully, the good people at Pruis Hall let us go longer than expected," Keppler said.

Among the many musical acts last night, Liz and Jackie played a vocal and piano duet of Carrie Underwood's song "Before He Cheats."

Freshmen nursing majors Katie Bartlett and Taylor Shields said they enjoyed Liz and Jackie's performance the most. Shields said it sounded just like Carrie Underwood.

After hearing that the Open Mic Night was a monthly event, Bartlett said she that she might get on the stage and sing next time.

Kimmy Holms, a sophomore Spanish and French major, and Nick Michael, a sophomore construction management major, said they came to see their friend Ryan Lentine play his guitar.

Lentine performed the song "The General" by Dispatch.

Junior life science major Miles Orwig said he played his guitar because he really enjoys performing for an audience.

"I just started to take my guitar playing seriously, by getting out there and playing for an audience," he said.

UPB will be holding monthly open mic nights for anyone interested in demonstrating their talent.
